Lecture: Independent theatres of India – encounter with extraordinary women
monday, 22.february 2010.
19:00, CZKD

Milena Dragicevic Sesic had been invited by Indian theatre forum to spend a month in India where she has visited independent theatres and theatre groups from Delhi to Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai. In Mumbai she held a seminar dealing with the question of manager and marketing capacities. This theatre network is consisted of theatres with different esthetics and orientations: from Pritvi theatre in Mumbai to the first country side female theater group in Tamil Nadu, from Academy of drama in Ninasam, to the company which practices experimental, contemporary dance in Chennai, prestigious theatre Rang Shankara in Bangalore, and even an amateur street theatre in Delhi.

The lecture will try to answer the questions – which ethos had connected these theatre artists, what are their artistic ranges and in which political and social context are they acting. How does the Indian castes system reflects itself on the theatre system and life in general? Are there connections between theatre and Bolivud? Why are the movie actors donating not only political parties but theatre projects as well?

Having in mind that these theatres are mostly leaded by women, the special attention will be given to their management skills (challenges, obstacles and visions), which are proven to be very successful in completely different cultorological context of Indian north and south, urban megalopolis and rural communities.
